Car Dealer Website Providers UK 2026: Platform vs Bespoke, and When to Switch

How UK car dealer website providers compare in 2026: DMS-bundled sites, OEM-mandated systems and bespoke builds, and the signs it is time to switch.

UK car dealer websites come from four kinds of provider: template platforms bundled with a DMS or stock tool, specialist dealer web agencies, OEM-mandated enterprise platforms for franchised sites, and bespoke builds. A platform is the right call for a dealer who wants stock live on a good template quickly and cheaply. A bespoke site is the right call when the platform’s limits (SEO, design, integrations, ownership) are costing you more than the build would. The signs are usually clear.

This is our honest read of the market, written for dealers weighing up a renewal notice. We build car dealer websites and integrations, so we have an interest, and we also tell plenty of dealers to stay where they are.

The four routes

DMS and stock-tool platforms. Click Dealer, Dragon2000, MotorDesk, DealerDesk and similar bundle a website with stock management, Auto Trader feeds and often finance and lead tools. One supplier, one login, one monthly fee. Design is template-based; stock pages are generated; SEO is whatever the template allows.

Specialist dealer web agencies. Autoweb Design, Bluesky Interactive, 67 Degrees and others build dealer sites, mostly on their own platforms, with in-house marketing. More design freedom than a DMS template, deeper stock-feed and finance integrations, usually aimed at multi-site independents and groups.

OEM-mandated and enterprise platforms. GForces (NetDirector) and the manufacturers’ own approved platforms serve franchised dealers and the top groups. The brand controls the template; the dealer controls very little below the fold. Local SEO and conversion work happen in the gaps the brand allows.

Bespoke. A site built for the dealer, on an open stack, with stock coming in from the DMS or Auto Trader Connect and everything else designed around how that business sells. Higher up-front cost, full ownership, no template ceiling.

What “rent” means for SEO

Most template sites share a code base across hundreds of dealers. That is efficient for the provider and it is why so many dealer websites look alike and rank alike. Vehicle pages are generated from the feed with the same boilerplate text; make and model landing pages either do not exist or are thin; aftersales pages are an afterthought; and technical fixes (Core Web Vitals, schema, canonicals) wait for the provider’s roadmap.

Meanwhile, eight in ten car buyers only visit Auto Trader and take 87 days on average to buy. A dealer whose own site cannot rank for its makes, its town or its aftersales services is renting all of its traffic from the marketplace, at a rising cost per retailer. The website is the only channel a dealer actually owns; a site that cannot be optimised is a channel you cannot grow. Our car dealer SEO page covers what an owned site should be doing.

When a platform is the right answer

A single-site independent with 30 to 80 cars, stock managed in the provider’s DMS, no in-house marketing and a budget that needs to stay predictable is well served by a platform. The stock is live, the Auto Trader feed works, the finance calculator is compliant, the lead goes into a CRM, and the provider handles updates. Do not let anyone talk you into a bespoke build to solve a problem you do not have.

The same is true when the OEM mandates the platform. Fight for what the programme allows (local content, reviews, aftersales pages, a Google Business Profile that is actually yours) rather than for a site you cannot have.

When to switch

These are the signs we see most often when a dealer is ready to move:

  1. You are paying for marketing the site cannot use. SEO recommendations keep coming back “not possible on this platform”.
  2. Stock is wrong somewhere, every day. The DMS, the website and Auto Trader disagree on price, spec or availability, and staff correct it by hand. That is a stock sync problem the platform should have solved.
  3. You have outgrown the template. Multiple sites, a prestige or specialist brand, a commercial-vehicle arm, an aftersales business or a part-ex tool that the template cannot present properly.
  4. Integrations are blocked. You want Auto Trader Connect valuations, a DMS the platform does not support, a finance provider outside the bundle, a Google vehicle feed or a Meta catalogue, and the answer is no or “on the roadmap”.
  5. You want to own it. Leaving the platform means losing the site and the URLs. A bespoke site, with its content, rankings and data, goes wherever you go.
  6. Performance has plateaued. Traffic, enquiries and conversion have been flat for a year while the marketplace bill rises.

Two of those and it is worth a conversation. Four and you already know.

Switching without losing what you have

The risk in a switch is not the new site; it is the migration. Crawl the old site and map every URL (stock pages included) to a redirect before launch. Rebuild the stock feed against the new site and run both in parallel for a week. Keep the Google Business Profile, the reviews and the phone numbers exactly as they are. Set up Search Console on the new site on day one and watch for 404s. We did this for GD Cars, a used car dealer whose rebuild kept its rankings because the redirect map was built before the design was.

What a bespoke dealer site should include in 2026

Stock from your master system (DMS or Auto Trader) with no re-keying; vehicle pages with real content, ordered images and walkaround video; make, model and aftersales landing pages you can edit; a part-exchange valuation tool; a finance calculator with a compliant representative example; online reservation if you sell online; LocalBusiness and Vehicle schema; Core Web Vitals within Google’s thresholds on a phone; and feeds out to every portal from one stock model. Our car dealer websites page lists the full build.

FAQ

Who are the main car dealer website providers in the UK?

DMS-bundled platforms (Click Dealer, Dragon2000, MotorDesk, DealerDesk), specialist dealer agencies (Autoweb Design, Bluesky Interactive, 67 Degrees), enterprise and OEM platforms (GForces/NetDirector and manufacturer-approved systems), and bespoke agencies such as ourselves.

How much does a car dealer website cost?

Platforms charge a monthly licence; bespoke builds are quoted per project and then cost hosting and support. Providers do not publish comparable price lists, so get written quotes for the same scope and check current pricing.

Can I keep my Auto Trader feed if I switch provider?

Yes. Stock can be pushed to Auto Trader from the new site, from your DMS, or pulled from Auto Trader with Stock Sync. Decide which system is the master before you migrate.

Will I lose my Google rankings if I change website?

Not if every old URL is redirected to its equivalent before launch and the new site is faster and better structured. Rankings are lost through missing redirects, not through changing provider.
