How Garages Get More MOT Bookings from Google: Local SEO Checklist

A local SEO checklist for garages and MOT centres: Google Business Profile, an MOT page that converts, online booking, reviews and DVSA-powered reminders.

Garages get more MOT bookings from Google by winning the local pack for “MOT near me” and “MOT [town]”: a complete, active Google Business Profile with the right categories and steady reviews, a website page built specifically for MOT bookings with price, slots and a booking button, and a reminder system that brings last year’s customers back before they search at all. Everything else is detail.

This is the checklist we run for independent garages on our local SEO service. It assumes you already have a website; if you do not, start at our garages and MOT centres page.

Why MOT is the search to win

MOT is the one job every driver must book, once a year, at a moment they can predict. DVSA data reported by motester.co.uk puts initial tests at around 35.5 million a year across roughly 23,000 testing stations, with about one in five failing first time. Every failure is repair work; every pass is a customer who now trusts you with the service.

The search is local and urgent. People type “MOT near me”, “MOT test [town]” or “cheap MOT [postcode]” on a phone and book with whoever appears in the map pack and looks open, close and trustworthy. Franchised dealers and fast-fit chains outspend independents on ads; the map pack is where an independent can beat them.

Google Business Profile, properly

Most garage profiles were claimed once and never touched. Set the primary category to MOT testing station if MOT is the job you want, with Auto repair shop, Car service and tyre-related categories as secondaries. Fill the services section with MOT class 4, class 7 if you test vans, retests, service and MOT packages and diagnostics, each with a price or “from” price and a sentence.

Post a photo a week: a car on the ramp, a tester with the DVSA certificate on the wall, the waiting room, the sign from the road. Use Google Posts for offers and seasonal reminders. Answer the Q&A section yourself before someone else does. And ask for reviews the same day, with a link, from every customer who passed or who had a fair repair after a fail. Reply to every review, including the bad ones, in a calm sentence.

The MOT page

One page, at /mot/, that answers what the searcher wants in the first hundred words: the price, the classes you test, how long it takes, whether they can wait, and a booking button or phone number that works with a thumb. Then the detail: what the test covers, what happens on a fail (retest rules, repair on site), a short FAQ, your address with a map, and reviews pulled from Google.

Add the schema: LocalBusiness or AutoRepair with name, address, phone, opening hours and the MOT service as an offer. Do not create a page per surrounding village with the same text swapped; one strong page for the garage’s real location outranks ten doorway pages and does not get filtered.

Booking that works at 9pm

MOT searches peak in the evening when the reminder letter or the DVSA text has just landed. If the only route is a phone number that rings out until morning, the booking goes to the garage with a form or a booking widget. Most garage management systems (Motasoft, GarageHive, Autowork Online, TechMan and others) offer online booking; failing that, a simple form with vehicle reg, preferred date and a promise to confirm by 9am works. Put the reg field first: with a reg lookup you know the vehicle before you call back.

MOT reminders: the booking you never have to win twice

Every customer who tests with you is a booking next year if you remind them first. The DVSA MOT History API returns the MOT expiry date for a registration, free of charge, so a garage can look up its own customers’ vehicles and send a reminder a month before expiry. Authentication is OAuth 2.0 client credentials plus an API key, and the free quota (500,000 requests a day) is far beyond any garage’s needs. Batch the lookups sensibly and you will never touch the limits.

The compliance point matters: the customer’s email or mobile plus their reg is personal data, so reminders need consent or the soft opt-in from a previous transaction, and every message needs an opt-out. Most garage management systems handle this; where they do not, we build it. See our MOT history API page for the integration and email and CRM for the reminder flows.

Measuring it

In Google Business Profile, watch calls, direction requests and website clicks month on month, and which search terms triggered the profile. In Search Console, filter to queries containing “MOT” and watch impressions and position for the /mot/ page. In the booking system, tag the source. If calls and bookings from Google rise while the ad budget stays flat, the checklist is working.

FAQ

How do I rank in the Google map pack for MOT?

Set MOT testing station as your primary category, keep name, address and phone identical everywhere, gather recent reviews and reply to them, and build a dedicated MOT page on your website that links to the profile. Proximity to the searcher does the rest.

Should I show my MOT price on the website?

Yes. Searchers compare price and convenience; hiding the price sends them to the next result. Show the price, the classes you test and how to book.

Can I send MOT reminders using DVSA data?

Yes. The DVSA MOT History API returns expiry dates free of charge. You need the customer’s consent (or the soft opt-in from a previous job) to email or text them, and an opt-out in every message.

Do I need a page for every nearby town?

No. One strong MOT page for your real location beats a dozen near-duplicate town pages, which Google tends to filter. Mention the areas you serve naturally within the page.
