Digital agency for car auction and remarketing businesses

A car auction website is a data product before it is a design job. Every lot needs a VRM-driven spec, a condition grade, ordered images and a valuation benchmark, and every bidder needs onboarding, deposits and a live bidding experience that does not fall over on sale day. We build auction platforms and the feeds that fill them.

UK remarketing splits three ways. The physical and online trade houses (BCA, Manheim, Aston Barclay, G3, Wilsons, SMA) move fleet, lease-return and part-exchange stock to dealers at volume. Dealer-to-dealer platforms such as Dealer Auction let retailers trade part-exchanges they do not want to retail. And the consumer-facing enthusiast auctions (Collecting Cars, Car & Classic, PistonHeads Auctions) sell interesting cars on editorial-grade listings with a hammer-price story attached. With 7.8 million used cars changing hands in 2025 and BCA reporting an average sold value of £7,660, the stock and the money are there; the difference between platforms is data quality and bidder trust.

Cataloguing is the bottleneck. Each lot needs make, model and derivative resolved from the VRM, a cap hpi or Glass's valuation for the guide price, an MOT and mileage history, a NAMA-style condition grade, and a set of images shot in a consistent order. Grading disputes are where buyer trust breaks, so the grade, the photos and the damage notes have to agree. On the sale side, the infrastructure has to handle a live-stream sale with hundreds of concurrent bidders, proxy bids, buyer fees, deposits and post-sale payment, logistics and title transfer, then push sold and unsold stock back out as feeds to buyers and stock aggregators.

We build auction platforms as software with a website on the front, not the reverse. VRM lookup, MOT history and valuation APIs pre-fill the lot from the registration. Bidder onboarding handles ID, deposits and trade verification. The bidding engine is load-tested for sale-day spikes and hosted with the headroom to match. For consumer auctions we add the editorial layer: photography direction, video, provenance write-ups and the SEO that makes each lot page rank long after the hammer falls, which is where the next consignment comes from.

The usual problems

  • Cataloguing hundreds of lots a week by hand

Spec typed from the V5C, images uploaded in the wrong order, no guide price until someone finds the cap book, and the sale goes live late.

  • Grading disputes kill repeat bidders

If the condition grade, the photos and the damage notes disagree, the buyer disputes, the vendor complains and the platform carries the cost.

  • Sale-day traffic on fragile infrastructure

Live-stream sales bring everyone at once. A bidding engine that lags or a server that queues bids loses hammer price and reputation in one afternoon.

  • Bidder onboarding is slow and manual

Trade verification, deposits and ID checks handled by email mean new buyers give up before their first bid.

  • Stock feeds to buyers are an afterthought

Dealer buyers want upcoming lots in their sourcing tools and aggregators want a clean feed. A PDF catalogue is neither.

  • Consumer auctions need content, not just listings

Enthusiast bidders expect a written history, a video and photography that would pass in a magazine, and the lot page has to keep ranking after the sale.

Auctions & Remarketing: common questions

Can you build an online car auction platform from scratch?

Yes. We build bespoke timed and live bidding engines with proxy bids, buyer fees, deposits, vendor portals and post-sale workflows, or extend platforms such as Bidpath and Auction Mobility where they fit. The choice depends on your sale format and volume.

How do you speed up cataloguing lots?

Enter the VRM and the lot is pre-filled from a licensed vehicle-data lookup: make, model, derivative, engine, colour, MOT and mileage history, and a valuation benchmark. Staff add the grade, damage notes and photos in a fixed order, and the lot is ready to publish.

Will the site cope with a live-stream sale?

That is a hosting and architecture question we design for from the start: a real-time bidding layer, load testing at several times expected peak, monitoring during sales and support cover on sale days. We size hosting to the sale calendar, not the average day.

Can dealer buyers receive our upcoming lots as a feed?

Yes. We publish catalogue and results feeds in the formats sourcing tools and aggregators accept, and can push sold stock to a buyer's DMS or website via API so it appears on their forecourt the day after the sale.

Do consumer auction sites need editorial content?

Yes. Enthusiast bidders pay for confidence: a written history, high-quality photography, a video and documented provenance. Those pages also rank for the model long after the sale, which brings the next seller to you. We handle the content and the SEO.
