Automotive SEO
Car dealer SEO for used stock, VDPs and dealer groups
Car dealer SEO is mostly about stock. Auto Trader owns the generic searches, so the traffic a dealer can win is the buyer looking for a specific car near them and the one searching your name. That means indexable vehicle pages, tidy search results pages, honest branch pages for groups and structured data Google can read.
Who we do this for
Native data integrations
A dealer website has two page types that matter for search: the vehicle detail page (VDP) for each car in stock and the search results page (SRP) for each make, model and body type you sell. Most dealer platforms get both wrong. VDPs are rendered from a stock feed with a templated title, no unique content and no structured data, then vanish when the car sells, leaving a 404. SRPs are filtered views with parameters in the URL that Google either ignores or indexes in thousands of duplicate versions.
Our approach is to treat stock as content. Every VDP gets a title and description built from the vehicle's real attributes, Car and Offer structured data, the dealer's own photos and a written description rather than the feed's boilerplate, and a sensible end of life when it sells: a 410 for one-off vehicles, or a redirect to the matching SRP with similar stock. SRPs are indexed only for combinations that have stock and demand (make, make and model, body type, price band where volume justifies it), with clean URLs, canonical rules for filters and a paragraph of real content per page. Everything else is noindexed.
For groups, each physical branch gets a page with its own NAP, opening hours, Google Business Profile link, staff, reviews and the stock at that site. These are branch pages, not city doorway pages, and they are what makes a group rank for the make and town searches that Auto Trader does not own. On top: brand and model landing pages for franchised sites, buying guides and walkaround video, and the technical hygiene (speed, crawl control, redirect map when you change platform) that dealer sites usually lack.
Sound familiar?
You probably need this if
- Google ranks your Auto Trader adverts above your own website for your own stock.
- Sold cars return a 404 and your search console is full of crawl errors.
- Your platform vendor's SEO settings are a single meta description field.
- Group branches rank for nothing because they all share one page.
- Your used stock pages have the same title as every other dealer on the same platform.
- You changed website provider and lost half your traffic.
Deliverables
What you get
- Technical audit of VDP and SRP indexing, crawl waste, duplicate content and stock page lifecycle
- VDP template with attribute-driven titles, unique descriptions and Car/Offer structured data
- SRP architecture: which make, model and body combinations are indexed, with canonical and noindex rules
- Sold-vehicle handling: 410, redirect or similar-stock logic agreed with your platform or built by us
- Branch pages for dealer groups with NAP, hours, reviews, staff and site-specific stock
- Brand and model landing pages for franchised dealers, with content that is not the manufacturer's
- Redirect map and migration plan when changing platform or DMS website provider
- Monthly reporting on rankings, organic VDP traffic, leads and Google Business Profile actions
Stock page indexing
The most common dealer SEO fault is a site where Google sees either nothing (stock rendered by JavaScript from a feed with no server-side HTML) or far too much (every filter combination indexed). We make sure VDPs are server-rendered with unique titles and structured data, define the SRP set that should exist, and give everything else a canonical or noindex. Sold vehicles are handled deliberately rather than left to 404.
Location pages for dealer groups
A group with eight sites needs eight branch pages, each a real page about a real place: address and map, opening hours, phone tracked per site, staff, reviews pulled from that site's Google Business Profile, services offered there and the vehicles physically at that branch. AutoDealer structured data ties the page to the profile. This is the legitimate version of location SEO; we do not build pages for towns where you have no premises.
Franchised versus independent
Franchised dealers fight the manufacturer's own site and templated brand content, so the wins are local model pages, used approved stock and aftersales. Independents and used car supermarkets have more freedom and less authority, so the wins are volume SRPs, a strong VDP template and reviews. Both benefit from walkaround video and honest written descriptions instead of feed boilerplate.
Process
How we approach it
-
Audit stock indexing
We crawl the site, compare indexed pages to live stock, review sold-vehicle handling and check what your platform lets us control.
-
Fix the templates
VDP and SRP templates are rebuilt or reconfigured for titles, content, structured data and canonicals, either on your platform or on a site we build.
-
Structure for groups
Branch pages, location structured data and stock-by-site are put in place, and Google Business Profiles are linked and cleaned up.
-
Content that earns links and clicks
Model guides, buying and finance explainers and walkaround video pages targeted at the queries dealers can realistically win.
-
Measure against leads
Reporting ties organic traffic to enquiry forms, calls and stock page views, so we optimise for enquiries rather than impressions.
Car Dealer SEO: common questions
Can a dealer website outrank Auto Trader?
Not for generic searches like used cars for sale. It can for your own brand, for make and model searches with a local modifier, and for specific vehicles where your VDP is richer than the marketplace listing. That is where dealer SEO effort goes.
Should vehicle pages be indexed if the car will sell in weeks?
Yes, as long as the end of life is handled. Stock pages earn long-tail traffic while live, and a redirect to similar stock or a clean 410 when sold keeps Google's index tidy. The problem is 404s and zombie pages, not short-lived pages.
What is a VDP and an SRP?
VDP is the vehicle detail page for one car in stock. SRP is the search results page listing vehicles for a filter such as used Ford Focus. Dealer SEO is largely about making the right SRPs indexable and every VDP unique.
Do dealer groups need a page per branch?
Yes. One page per physical site with its own address, opening hours, reviews, staff and stock is what ranks for make and town searches and supports each Google Business Profile. Pages for towns where you have no site are doorway pages and we do not build them.
Can you do SEO on our existing dealer platform?
Usually to a point. Click Dealer, Autoweb, GForces and similar platforms expose different levels of template control. We audit what can be changed, fix that, and tell you honestly if the platform is the ceiling.
How do you measure car dealer SEO?
Organic sessions to VDPs and SRPs, enquiries and calls from organic traffic, rankings for make, model and branch terms, Google Business Profile actions, and indexed page counts against live stock. Not vanity traffic.
