Shopify car parts store development with fitment and reg lookup

A Shopify car parts store lives or dies on fitment. Shopify gives you fast hosting, a tidy checkout and a big app store; it does not know what a K-Type is. We build Shopify parts stores with reg lookup, year/make/model search, compatibility tables and feeds to eBay, Amazon and Google, so the right part is found first time.

Shopify is the right platform for a parts retailer who wants to sell without running servers: hosting, checkout, payments, fraud screening and PCI are Shopify's problem. What Shopify does not provide natively is a vehicle model. There is no built-in idea of a car, a K-Type or a fitment table, so every Shopify parts store is really Shopify plus a fitment layer, and choosing that layer is the whole project.

There are two routes. The app route uses fitment apps from the Shopify App Store: PartsPal (by Partly), AutoSync, Standard Parts Toolkit and similar offer year/make/model search, my-garage and, in some cases, UK registration lookup. They are quick to deploy and priced monthly; the trade-off is that fitment data lives in the app's schema and UK reg coverage varies. The custom route is a private Shopify app we build that calls a UK vehicle data provider (UKVD, DVLA VES) for the reg lookup, resolves the vehicle to a K-Type and filters the catalogue through metafields and Shopify's Search and Discovery filters. It costs more up front and gives you fitment data you own.

Beyond fitment, the Shopify-specific work is variants and catalogue structure (a brake disc with six sizes across three brands needs a plan), metaobjects for OE cross-references, Shopify Markets if you sell into Europe, and channel feeds: the Google and YouTube channel for Shopping, Shopify Marketplace Connect or a dedicated integration for eBay and Amazon with K-Type compatibility attached. For trade customers, Shopify Plus adds B2B company accounts, price lists and payment terms.

Sound familiar?

You probably need this if

  • You are on Shopify and customers keep ordering the wrong part because there is no vehicle filter.
  • Your fitment app does year/make/model but not UK registration lookup.
  • Fitment data lives inside an app you cannot export from.
  • Your eBay listings have K-Types and your Shopify store has none.
  • Trade customers want an account with their prices and Shopify shows them retail.
  • The theme was built for fashion and the product page hides the specification.

Deliverables

What you get

  • Fitment layer recommendation: App Store app versus custom private app, with costs and trade-offs
  • UK reg lookup on the storefront resolving to vehicle and K-Type
  • Year/make/model/engine selector and my-garage with persistent vehicle selection
  • Compatibility table on every product page from your fitment data
  • Catalogue structure: collections, variants, metafields and metaobjects for OE numbers and cross-references
  • Theme build or customisation with specification-first product pages
  • Channel feeds: Google Shopping, eBay and Amazon with fitment attached
  • Shopify Plus B2B configuration for trade accounts where required

Reg lookup apps for Shopify

A UK buyer expects to type a registration, not pick a year, make and model. On Shopify that means either a fitment app with UK reg support or a private app calling a vehicle data API. We prefer the private app for stores with real fitment data: the reg resolves to a K-Type through UKVD or a similar provider, the K-Type filters products via metafields, and the vehicle is remembered in the customer's session and account. Lookup costs are per query and paid to the data provider, so we cache sensibly.

Fitment data and metafields

Shopify has no fitment table, so we model one. Each product carries a metafield list of K-Types, OE numbers and cross-references, populated from TecDoc, your supplier's data or a spreadsheet we clean. Search and Discovery filters and collection rules use those metafields to show only parts that fit the selected vehicle, and the product page renders a proper compatibility table rather than a wall of text in the description.

Shopify Plus for trade

Motor factors and performance brands selling to garages need trade pricing, credit terms and account ordering. Shopify Plus B2B provides company accounts with multiple buyers, price lists per customer group, net terms and a separate trade storefront if you want one, all on the same catalogue as retail. For B2B-first businesses with complex pricing, Magento may still be the better fit; we say so when it is.

Process

How we approach it

  1. Catalogue and fitment review

We look at your product data, where fitment comes from (TecDoc, supplier, your own) and how many SKUs and vehicles are involved. This decides app versus custom.

  2. Store architecture

Collections, variant strategy, metafield definitions and the URL structure are designed before any theme work, because changing them later on Shopify is painful.

  3. Fitment build

Either the chosen app is configured and populated, or our private app is built: reg lookup, K-Type resolution, product filtering and compatibility tables.

  4. Theme and content

Online Store 2.0 theme sections for parts: specification tables, OE numbers, fitment notes, brand pages, and a checkout that asks for the registration where useful.

  5. Channels and launch

Google Shopping, eBay and Amazon feeds connected with fitment data, redirects from any old store mapped, and launch with monitoring.

Shopify Car Parts Store: common questions

Can Shopify do UK number plate lookup?

Not natively. Some App Store fitment apps include UK reg lookup, or we build a private app that calls a UK vehicle data provider, resolves the registration to a K-Type and filters the catalogue. The custom route gives you fitment data you own.

Which Shopify apps handle car parts fitment?

PartsPal by Partly, AutoSync, Standard Parts Toolkit and Instant Fit are the ones we see most, each offering year/make/model search and compatibility tables. Coverage of UK vehicles and registration lookup varies, so we test against your catalogue before recommending one.

Does Shopify cope with a large parts catalogue?

Yes, with planning. Variant limits, collection rules and search filters need designing around parts rather than clothing. We use metafields for fitment and OE data and Search and Discovery for vehicle filtering.

Can we sell to trade on Shopify?

Shopify Plus includes B2B: company accounts, customer-specific price lists, net payment terms and quantity rules. On standard plans we can approximate trade pricing with customer tags and apps, but Plus is the proper route for a real trade counter online.

Can our Shopify catalogue feed eBay and Amazon with fitment?

Yes. Shopify Marketplace Connect or a dedicated integration lists to eBay and Amazon from your Shopify products, and we attach K-Type compatibility to the eBay and Amazon listings from the same fitment data used on the store.

Should we choose Shopify or WooCommerce for car parts?

Shopify if you want hosting and checkout handled and are happy to pay app subscriptions for fitment. WooCommerce if you want to own the platform and data outright and can accept responsibility for hosting. We build both and will tell you which fits your catalogue.
