Kitspares case study: an online store for kit car builders

Kitspares supplies parts, spares and accessories for everything from kit cars to rally cars, from the smallest nut and bolt to complete engine set-ups, with a workshop fitting service on site. We built their online store in 2015, one of the first automotive eCommerce projects under the Dijitul Automotive name. Kitspares still trades today from kitspares.co.uk and its eBay shop.

The challenge

Kit car builders do not shop like ordinary motorists. There is no registration to type in and no TecDoc K-Type for a home-built Zero or a rally-prepared Escort. Buyers know the part they need by donor vehicle, by GBS part number or by description, and they often need technical advice before they order.

The stores at the Great British Sports Cars factory hold close to 3,000 lines. Every one needed a clear title, a photo and a category that made sense to a builder browsing on a laptop in the garage, not to a warehouse system.

Kitspares already sold on eBay. The website had to earn its place next to that channel by being the easier place to find the right part and get a straight answer.

What we did

We built an eCommerce store around the way kit car builders actually search: by donor car, by build stage and by product range, so suspension, brakes, engine and interior parts sit where a builder expects them rather than where a supplier feed put them.

Product pages carry the technical detail that stops a wrong order: what it fits, what it comes with and what else you will need. Contact details and the workshop fitting service sit alongside the basket, because a phone call still closes a lot of kit car sales.

Checkout and shipping were set up to handle small consumable orders and bulky items alike. Kitspares now ships internationally and runs an eBay shop alongside the website.
